Meet the Alpacas

‘O so much fun! 🦙

Olaf
Olaf is one of the alpacas that we brought home last fall from a less than ideal situation in Maryland. Olaf was raised with Llamas so he hasn’t had the chance to enjoy the camaraderie and feeling of safety that alpacas need from each other.  He is settling in and feeling more secure every day and he even comes up to the fenceline to be hand fed.  He has had oral surgery to correct an injury to his jaw and he is doing great. We’re happy to provide an environment where he can thrive.  We have no idea how old he is but guessing he is older than 6 yrs.

Wilson
Wilson is from Maryland as well.  Despite being blind in his left eye and his right ear appears “broken” he is quick to defend other alpacas if he thinks they are being harmed. This may explain his injuries. He is still not comfortable coming up to be hand fed but he is getting closer every day. Wilson should come with a spit warning if you get too close to his face!  He is 6 years old. We think his grey and white fiber is going to make some pretty yarn and we are glad he found his happy home with us.

Farkle
Also from Maryland, Farkle is now the largest of all our alpacas and is 4 years old. How do you not love those pointy hairy ears! He is slowly learning to trust his new home and brothers and is almost eating out of our hand.

Julio
Julio just joined our farm family this spring from Catawba VA.  At 18 months old he has already won blue ribbons at competitions.  Although, we don’t know how they cleaned him up enough for a show – he is a real messy marvin.  He stands in the rain then rolls in the dirt and hay.  He’s a sweetheart and will be an important part of our “Alpaca Palooza” events…Invite him to your birthday party!

Theo
At 10 months old, Theo is our only Cria and he came with Julio from Catawba, VA. Cria is derived from the spanish word for baby or offspring. Since Theo and Julio are so young, they must be housed separately from the adult alpacas.  Theo pretty much follows Julio everywhere as he learns how to be an alpaca and the two of them spend a lot of time along the fenceline with the adult alpacas.  We are working on Theo’s halter training and plan for him to be part of our “Alpaca Palooza” events with Julio.

Mojo

Mojo holds his own with the older boys. He can often be seen stirring up a little wrestling match with his brothers. While he is the lightest in color with his cream fiber, he often looks orange due to the clay dirt that he rolls in

Oreo

Oreo, affectionately known as double-stuffed, is easily recognized because of the white spot on his forehead. He is very curious and can often be found standing at a gate trying to pick the lock.  We also discovered during a snowstorm this past winter that he loves the snow and was often seen frolicking in the snow. He is Indigo’s half brother.

Fresno

Fresno is our “pretty boy” having won awards for his excellent fiber. He has a very easy-going attitude and is the most chill of all the boys.

Lido

Lido is cautiously influenced by treats! It has taken him a while but he now joins brothers to check out the visitors. He looks a lot like Fresno so he wears a mohawk haircut so we can tell them apart.

Rocco

Rocco is the smallest of the adults and enjoys dirt baths and rolling in hay. He is small and mighty. When it is time to round up the alpacas for check ups, he’s the hardest and last to catch. He’s super fast and agile.

Bingo

Bings is the self-elected leader of the group.  His heart is easily won over by treats and snacks.  He loves his neck scratched and will steal your hat if you aren’t looking.  He also gives alpaca kisses.

Gusto

Gusto was born on our wedding day (although we didn’t own him at the time). He spent his earliest years as a companion to a sick alpaca, so he’s kinda chill.  But when the water hose comes out, he springs into action and is the first in line and he likes to present his backside for a cooldown spray!

Indigo

Indigo loves to give alpaca kisses. He is Bingo’s best friend and the two are often found together. Whether we are draining and cleaning the water trough or spraying the hose, Indigo is there to get wet and cool. He predictably lays down anywhere he can find a puddle. He and Oreo share a father so they are half brothers.

What our visitors say!

The farm tour was the highlight of our day. You can tell that Ann and Larry have put a lot of work and love into the farm. We enjoyed learning about it and, most of all, we loved getting to feed and pet the alpacas! Luke the dog was so friendly and cute too.

The tour offered of the farm was a special bonus - our toddler great-niece and -nephew staying in a house nearby LOVED feeding the alpacas (as did the adults) - Ann and Larry were generous with their time and sharing info about the alpacas, chickens, etc. and were very patient and sweet with the toddlers.
